This review is from: Cabin Pressure, The Complete Series 1 (Unabridged) (Audio Download)
'Cabin Pressure' slipped my notice when it was broadcast on BBC Radio 4, but on the strength of its writer - the very funny John Finnemore - and its cast, I decided to give this a try. I didn't regret it. It's not hard to see why it's attracted a cult following on the radio, and like some of the best radio shows, it's impossible to imagine it working nearly as well on TV - by necessity of it being in the sound medium, the dialogue is razor sharp. Stephanie Cole plays the formidable Carolyn Knapp-Shappey, who gained MJN Air's one and only aircraft (Gertie) as part of her divorce settlement, and tries - and usually fails - to run a tight ship. Getting in the way are the crew - Martin (Benedict Cumberbatch, a world away from his role in 'Sherlock'), the youthful Captain whose obsession with flying and a desire to do things 'by the book' are a constant source of frustration to his colleagues, Douglas (Roger Allam), his sarcastic, wily and deeply untrustworthy first officer, and Carolyn's son Arthur (John Finnemore), the airline's one and only flight attendant, whose combination of relentless optimism and sheer idiocy gets him through the day. Each episode revolves around a particular job, and tends to be named after their eventual - or intended - destination. With guest stars for this first series including Helen Baxendale, John Sessions and Geoffrey Whitehead (as the wonderfully gruff and incredibly generous Mr Birling), 'Cabin Pressure' is a real class act, and I can't recommend it enough. And
As an additional note, it's worth pointing out that Audible provide this download as a DRM-protected single file, in case that presents a problem for anyone. Other outlets, including AudioGO itself, offer alternative download options which don't have these issues, but for this price, Series 1 is a steal.
