The Joy Luck Club is one of those amazing, life enhancing books that stay with you for ever, and as such I feel it has become an impossible act to follow for the author. This latest novel felt forced and obvious, the characters so stereotypical and the plot so grim without any redemption that I gave up reading it quarter way through and sent it to Oxfam. This could be just me, and perhaps if I had kept on it may have redeemed itself, I am willing to be proved wrong, but there are so many excellent books out there and so little time that I needed more to lure me in.
