Whenever I watch a Pinter play on stage, I am driven back to looking at a printed version of the text, to a kind of mental exercise which consists in supplying some of the ideas which the characters don't ever get around to saying. I recently attended 'Old Times' at the Harold Pinter Theatre and have found myself looking again and again at the text to analyse the ways in which the characters avoid communicating with one another for most of the play. There are so many hidden depths in Pinter's work. It's quite a challenge.
