Promising sci-fi series,

This review is from: The 4400: The Complete First Season [DVD] (DVD)
There is only one problem with this show - Series 1 was WAY too short. The premise is intriguing - 4400 people who have disappeared over the last century are returned - from where, nobody knows. They have not aged and they have no memory of where they have been, nor are they aware that any time has passed. Instead of being allowed return immediately to their loved ones, they are held in a detention centre until they have been assessed as a threat to national security. Thanks to the legal system they are eventually released - and then the fun begins. After the pilot episode, each episode deals with a single individual who is displaying unusual powers. The questions for the security teams monitoring the returnees are; what has caused these changes, are they dangerous, and how many more of the returnees have unusual powers?
However, the series doesn't just deal with the fantastic, it also deals with the very human emotions of someone who has been returned - how do they cope with the fact that they are still the same age as they were when they disappeared, whereas their friends and family have all grown up or, in some cases, died? How does someone look for a job when they have a 40 year gap on their resume? How does a returnee adjust to the social and political changes which have occured while they were gone?
Looking forward to getting my hands on series 2!
