An uplifting experience,
This review is from: Grand Organ of Liverpool Cathe [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This was the first of Priory's "Grand Organ" DVD series [so far Liverpool, York, Lincoln, Kings College, Canterbury and Exeter, with Salisbury in 2012]. Ian Tracey the Cathedral organist plays an interesting and varied programme with transcriptions as well as works for organ, fully demonstrating the scope of this wonderful 5 manual instrument. He plays from a detached console so we are given different views of hands an feet, and visual interest is maintained by views of the cathedral and its interior - often appropriate to the music being played - and views of Liverpool.
Composers include Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schumann, Mulet, Tchaikowsky, Lefebure-Wely, Edmunsen and Verdi (demonstrating the new Trompette Militaire to great effect)and others.
It goes without saying that the sound quality of this Priory DVD is excellent, with a choice of 5.1 surround or stereo sound, and one cannot help but be uplifted and deeply satisfied by the experience. The picture quality is also excellent with Priory's distinctive tonal palette in exterior shots. Three extras include Ian Tracey giving an overview of the organ demonstrating various stops and choruses, another where he talks about his connections with the Cathedral and memorable occasions, and a third where he talks about the programme. All in all an excellent production and highly recommended to all lovers of the organ. A bonus CD of the programme is included in the price as is an informative booklet.
The other DVDs in the series follow a similar pattern and can also be recommended. By the 5th [Canterbury] a valuable "Set-Up" option is included for checking the audio and visual settings on your equipment. Don't hesitate, buy it now! It should be available from the UK being a British product.
