This review is from: Days of Destruction. Days of Revolt (Hardcover)
I'm a big fan of Joe Sacco and have admired and enjoyed his books on Palestine and the Bosnian War. I was therefore looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, I found it just too depressing. Unlike Sacco's other work, 'Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt' is mostly text with some illustrations, the prose being written by Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer prize winning journalist. Hedge's prose is, from the outset, an unrelenting series of sad and harrowing stories. It's not that I'm aversive to harsh, factual realities, I've read and appreciated Noam Chomsky political books which aren't exactly a barrel of laughs but, for me, Hedge's approach is just too bleak. If you're willing to take on board the harshness of Hedge's window in Poor America, go for it. If you'd prefer something with at least a little light relief or a full Sacco illustrated book, try Palestine or Safe Area Goradze.
