poor quality high chaparral dvd set,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: "High Chaparral - The Complete Series" - 26 Discs - Region 2 - Import - Audio: English (DVD)
was really looking forward to receiving my dvd set but this was a very big disappointment - the quality of dvd's and packaging was poor and did not meet factory standards. I suspect this was not an original product. The first episode could not be played in English for the first minute and had intermittent sound issues. The second episode as well as having sound issues would not even play to the end. I went no further ... would not recommend this dvd set to any High Chaparral fan. The only good points were that Amazon did ensure the outer packaging for posting was done really well, delivery times met expectations and Amazon dealt with my complaint and refund very promptly - so wouldn't hesitate to use Amazon again.

Hi I believe this is the German set and your comments are correct. The first minute on the pilot episode has some sort of audio problem with their source material. I have all the German sets and although initially pleased with them, they have not stood up well at all- quality has rapidly declined and now I'm faced with having to replace the whole series of my favourite TV western. There is a Dutch set which is an improvement and supposedly remastered, although I believe Australia are also releasing sets as well now. However, you'll need an all-region DVD player as its Region 4 and while some Region 4 work on our PAL systems in the UK, not all - as I've discovered to my cost!

Hi I have only watched a few episodes but have been very satisfied. I agree picture quality is not top notch but I am happy so far considering the TV reception I had when watching first time round. The reviews on Amazon Germany are good and buying direct from there is cheaper for UK buyers. The story of the first couple of minutes as I recall is that this was a prelude section that was only aired in Germany and sets the scene for the series we all remember so fondly. This brief section was re-discovered in raw quality and was added un-restored to the German set with no other language option. So anyone buying this set should not panic in those first couple of minutes, the plot is easy to follow and English language kicks in after this German piece at the point which we British viewers started watching all those years ago. So we are gaining a new little piece we never saw on UK TV and should not worry that that bonus is flawed. I hear the Dutch version offers this brief piece restored and with English language. That alone wasn't enough to put me off the German set. I hope the quality of my set does not deteriorate as I work through the episodes like you suggest, I consider Studio Canal to be a decent company.

I am really, really curious to learn what did you do with your DVD''s to cause them to "deteriorate"... did you play them on the gramophone, perhaps ?
