2.0 out of 5 stars Foggy fairy tale., 30 April 2011
This review is from: The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella ( The Slipper & the Rose ) (DVD)
I first saw this film when it was screened at the Royal Film Performance in the late seventies (?) Almost a self-mocking "pantomime parody", it actually worked very well as such with one-liners from the likes of Edith Evans, Julian Orchard and Margaret Lockwood scoring bullseyes. Never really taking themselves too seriously, the starry cast entered into Bryan Forbes' spirit of the piece and it succeeded on several levels. The finale "walk down" lent a theatrical touch bringing much applause from the Odeon Leicester Square's 1,900+ audience. The Sherman brothers' songs were well up to the mark and the 35 mm. print looked very good. A disappointment then that the DVD transfer quality is so dire. I project films at home so obviously picture quality is essential and most DVDs are capable of being upscaled by my kit to a very high standard (comparable with my Blu-ray product in some cases, depending on original negative quality and the standard of the transfer process)but this DVD looks poor on a state-of-the-art TV! I already had a DVD of "TSATR" from a few years ago and hoped this might be superior but they are both like trying to watch the film through thick fog! Nice film - rotten DVD.
