This review is from: Relentless (Shattered Hearts 1) (Kindle Edition)
I read Tristan and Senia's story in Abandon (a companion/spin-off novella) and liked the characters so much I wanted to find out how they got to where they are in Abandon. This meant I already know how the Shattered Hearts series ends before actually reading it but it didn't in any way lessen my interest or enjoyment in reading Relentless.
Claire is one hell of a complicated young woman. By the time Relentless begins she has a lot of baggage, but is trying to rebuild her life and move on from her past troubles. She has some interesting coping techniques, some of which involve a certain amount of avoidance. She's pretty broken and struggles to feel loved.
Claire finds an instant connection and attraction to her new neighbour Adam. He has his own issues, which are introduced in the book. There were a few moments where I was worried about Adam's reaction to certain events, but he seemed to take things a lot better than I expected. I loved watching Claire and Adam playing cat and mouse, and their banter is great. Adam is determined to date Claire, but she's equally determined to remain friends and keep him at a distance. I really liked Adam; he's hot, surfs, looks after old ladies and helps Claire to feel loved.
We are also introduced to Claire's ex-boyfriend Chris Knight. He mainly appears as a secondary character in Claire's memories but I expect him to have a far greater role in the next book. Chris left Claire to pursue his music career (at her very selfless insistence). I'm sure we're supposed to see him as her childhood saviour and as the hot bad boy rocker, but to me, in Relentless, Chris seemed pretty selfish. I couldn't understand why he hadn't checked up on her or why he didn't fight harder to begin with. Whilst Claire's been suffering until she meets Adam, Chris has been off being a rockstar surrounded by groupies. I'm looking forward to seeing how Cassia makes Chris seem worth of Claire's love both in the past and potentially in the future. As of now I'm very much in team Adam.
I really liked Claire and kept hoping she'd find a way past everything...
