'Turf' is a remarkably assured debut novel which really drew me in. Jaylon is a 15yr old gang member faced with the prospect of killing a rival gang member in order to move up through the ranks. The story follows his internal battle as he tries to come to terms with his fate and his lack of choices. The first person narrative really gets the reader inside Jaylon's mind, and it's impossible not to sympathise with him, and sobering to think that this life is a reality for a number of young men in today's society.
What lifted the book above the stereotypical gang story for me was the supernatural element. The otherworldly characters that Jay meets can be seen either as a religious or spiritual intervention, or simply as his drug-fuelled attempts to find a way to deal with the downwards spiral of his life. Either way it allows the reader to explore Jay's feelings and vulnerabilities, and gives the story more heart.
A fantastic debut, and an author I'll definitely look out for in future.
