Sophisticated New York tragi-comedy,
This review is from: Tootsie [DVD] (DVD)
My memory of this was of a slapstick cross-dressing comedy, but it's nothing of the sort. It's one of those sophisticated New York films, like so many that came out in the 1970s (Serpico, Saturday Night Fever, Manhattan). It's about an angry actor who is having a bit of a mid-life crisis. Some of the themes are a bit dated, the feminism issues have been won, so the serious thread has lost a bit of zip. It's ahead of its time in many ways, dealing with single parenthood, lesbianism and modern relationships.
It's heartwarming, real and funny and well worth another look.

Not sure the feminism issues have been won - the film is still so relevant!
