This review is from: Pelican West Plus (Audio CD)
"Pelican West" was the only album issued by the original Haircut 100 line-up before Nick Heyward left to pursue a solo career. It reached number 2 in the UK album charts in 1982 and included the hit singles 'Favourite Shirts', 'Love Plus One' and 'Fantastic Day'. The band were fairly unique at the time for displaying their 60's pop influences at a time when this was not fashionable. Their jangly guitar sound coupled with a distinctive 80's production still stands up today and there is a bonafide nugget in 'Surprise Me Again' which is worth the price of admission alone.
As with the reissue of Nick's solo album "North Of A Miracle" this package is not without it's flaws. The cover reproduction is dark and the 7" version of 'Nobody's Fool'(not to mention the demo version originally included with Flexipop magazine) is inexplicably omitted in favour of the 12" version which is already available on Camden's "Greatest Hits". The same criticism can be levelled at the inclusion of the 12" version of 'Favourite Shirts' (although at least the album version is also present) at the expense of unreleased cuts which are referred to in the "Greatest Hits" sleevenotes; the Haircut 100 versions of 'Blue Hat For A Blue Day' and 'Whistle Down The Wind' along with the lost single 'Sunny Boy, Sunny Girl'.
These problems aside it is great to see this album available again, chock-full as it is of some true pop gems.
