4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating erotica, 31 May 2004
This review is from: Eugenie De Sade [1970] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a curious but fascinating film, no doubt very much like its literary source. The plot is this: A daughter (Soledad Miranda) and her stepfather (Paul Muller) go on a murder spree just for the perverse enjoyment of it. It all goes horribly wrong when the stepdaughter falls in love with one of their intended victims.
What makes this film fascinating are two things. Firstly, the director, Jess Franco. While he may lack polish as both a director and an editor, he does bring a freewheeling vigour to his work. His finished product may be a little rough, but it does convey his passion for the material. However, what Franco should really be given credit for is employing Soledad Miranda in the starring role as Eugenie.
She is astonishing. She acts everyone else off the set – not difficult, admittedly. With a mere glance at the camera, she can be both alluring and sinister. In one scene where they kill a female hitchhiker, Miranda is driven to a frenzy of sexual excitement while the hitchhiker thrashes helplessly away beneath her. Miranda’s performance perfectly conveys the sexual desire that drives her to murder. It is highly erotic – and disturbing, because it is so erotic. The slow-fuse build up to the murder adds to the sexual intensity of the scene. Miranda holds the film together in a way that a less talented actress –even if she was as beautiful as Miranda- would not. If it had not been for her, this film would probably have dipped from view long ago, despite the virtues of Jess Franco.
If you like erotic films or films that are off-kilter, then give this a try. If nothing else, you will almost certainly fall in love with Soledad Miranda. Her striptease is an utter delight.
