I asked my daughter what she thought of this book. She said:
" it was sad because of the family separation, scary because the soldiers were ready to shoot people but it had a happy ending. I really enjoyed reading it."
I read through the story before I gave it to her and I think it's a great book for children aged 10+. As a child I loved reading Gillian Cross' Demon Headmaster series and it's nice to know that my children can now enjoy this author's great books. Although it's quite a serious topic, with children fleeing from the soldiers and people desperate for food, it's a gripping story. I suppose it depends on your child's disposition and interests. My daughter loves reading dystopian fiction.
