This review is from: Puccini - Turandot (Capuana Venice 1953) (Audio CD)
An unusually fine performance of a 1953 live recording. It's certainly not 'hi-fi' and the orchestra disappears during the singing, so it would never be a first choice. But if you cherish wonderful singing that's what you get and the voices come over really well. The three principals are all outstanding: Grob-Prandl warm and fearless but the tenor is simply astonishing and sings Calaf with a refinement and impeccable musicianship simply unknown today (at least in this role). Coupled with Capuana's very broad tempi which help clarify even the most complex ensembles this is a must-have for enthusiasts of this opera - and of great singing.
