5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful set, 11 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Jacqueline Du Pre: The Complete EMI Recordings (Audio CD)
I agree completely with the enthusiastic reviews here. This is an absolutely outstanding set, at an amazingly low price. Jacqueline du Pré was a truly remarkable musician, and her verve, thoughtfulness and sheer brilliance show in every one of these fine recordings. It is true that the notes are basic at best, but at this price for 17 superb CDs I don't think one can carp. Don't hesitate - it's a fantastic set.

Here's a (fairly complete) list of the works included:

Delius: Cello Concerto

Saint-Saens: Carnaval des animaux - Le cynge

Which "Elgar: Cello Concerto" in this box? with Barbirolli or Barenboim?

It's the classic Barbirolli recording. I didn't know she'd recorded the Elgar with Barenboim - which orchestra was it?

The duPre/Barenboim Elgar concerto which has had most currency is the live Philadelphia version, first issued on LP by CBS and now on Sony. There is another version with Barenboim recorded live for television which is included in Christopher Nupen DVD about the 'cellist. And there is a further version with Barbirolli, recorded live in Prague, which has been issued on CD by Testament. That makes four versions now available.
I was at what proved to be her final performance of the work at the Royal Festival Hall with Zubin Mehta conducting. I am not aware of a recording of that concert; but one might exist somewhere.
