This review is from: Steve Gray: Guitar Concerto; Richard Harvey: Concerto Antico (Audio CD)
Don't get me wrong, this is good guitar music played superbly by Williams, but i've listened to it a few times now and i'm still waiting for the love light to come on.
I'm finding the Harvey Concerto to be too archaic in its styling - the references to old dance and song forms don't appeal to me at all. I prefer contemporary music to reference contemporary styles, but this sounds a bit too much like a piece of music specially written for the BBC - too safe and imitative for me.
The Gray is much more of its time, and seems to have something interesting to say. Unfortunately, whilst the first two movements are very much my cup of tea, i will always have to avoid listening to the last movement in future as i find it so distasteful with its brash incongruities and unpleasant jolts of discordance. Going by the title 'Jokes', i found nothing funny about it and wish it hadn't been tagged on the end of something that was quite enjoyable up to that point.
The problem with the CD is that it mixes two different composers, leaving the listener with the risk of liking either one or the other, but probably not both.
