Another great trawl through the vaults,
This review is from: Pop A Paris Vol. 2 - A Tout Casser! [European Import] (Audio CD)
This isn't the strongest of this series of compilations. Numbers 5 and 1 are IMHO the best value.
Les Yper Sound aka Pierre Henri's Psyche Rock has been the subject of a various re-mixes, one of which appeared as the Matt Groening's Futurama theme, as well as being namechecked by Stereolab. A truly strange but infectiously groovy instrumental featuring bells and electronica aplenty.
Gainsbourg's Psychestanie is a pleasant electric sitar instrumental, while 'Le jeu de telephone' is a workaday French language re-hash of 'music to watch girls by', while 'Un trou dans ma chaussure' and 'ces bottes sont faites pour marcher' are, you guessed it, carbon copies of 'hole in my shoe' and 'these boots are made for walking' respectively.
All in all this is another worthwhile item in the series, and with the exception of the obnoxious lame novelty single that seems to find its way onto each of these compilations (in this case the risible and highly negative 'Hey Mr Caution' by Eddie Constantine) the quality is very high.
All in all another worthwhile round-up of songs that deserve to be better known than they are, familiar sixties themes seen through the prism of another culture. Fascinating, entertaining and very groovy.
