5.0 out of 5 stars "Drive on driver- we're going for a ride", 26 Oct 2009
This review is from: Breezy Stories (Audio CD)
It's quite a ride- to some scary places and an opaque world conjured up by Danny O'Keefe. I was made to buy this record. I was a student and I got friendly with a record shop manager. The shop was closing down and he was Grom Kelly- former singer with the band Junior's Eyes. He sold me a lot of records and I still play them all- some (like this one) on CD. Anyway Grom opened up my ears and I'm still listening. Some of these songs are scary- on the "razor's edge" as Danny sings. All in all, a very atmospheric bit of vinyl. There are all those New York session heavies- Purdie, Edwards, McCracken, Hathaway and the David Bromberg Band plus Dr John and the more "Good Time" songs are propelled by Bromberg and his merry men- the darker stuff mostly the other guys. Songs about Babe Ruth and prostitutes, drug dealers and angel- all very perplexing to me back at the time but compelling then and now. Grom sold me a copy of "So Long Harry Truman" the follow up record- recorded on the West Coast with The Eagles playing on some tracks- still a great album but we agreed that O'Keefe was a musical chameleon, and on this he's hit the spot for a musical mystery. I remember someone writing to the NME from Yorkshire praising this album shortly after I bought it- I reckon he'd been sold a copy by Grom as well. The NME said the album hadn't registered down in London SE1-so that was that. I played the album to people-some loved it- others hated it. I rate it very highly and feel it's in a class of its own. Perhaps it's got a lot to do with Arif Mardin or that scary Harlowesque (or is it Mae West?) platinum blonde on the cover but for me I can still remember how it insinuated into my mind from that first spinning of the disc a long time ago.Buy this album and enter this strange world and listen to great songs played by some of the best musicians who are seemingly consciously engaged in making a very special album. Of course Judy Collins and Leo Sayer covered tracks from Breezy Stories and the bonus track "Good Time Charlie" has been done by everyone as mentioned in an earlier review- you can add other impressive musicians like Charlie Rich and Chris Hillman to that list. It's a fine sad song but not dark like those Breezy Stories.
