Shark meat And some murcury, too?,
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
While numerous research and studies worldwide have shown strong proof and warning signs of high levels of the methyl mercury in shark meat, I am not sure why the author would promote shark meat recipes. Methyl mercury can be harmful to the unborn baby's brain and young children's nerve system, and it is such a concern that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended NOT to eat shark meat[...]
In addition, despite the stereotypes portrayed in the Hollywood movies, sharks are critical and essential in balancing our eco-system. While all the conservationists working so hard to advocate in protecting sharks and banning shark products, I believe that chefs can put in some efforts too. We recognize that some cultures do eat shark and whale, but respecting the traditions is one thing, promoting shark receipes in a commerical cookbook is another. Any conscientious, socially responsible and professional chef would research and realize the health and environmental hazards his/her dish may bring to the table.
Please do not eat shark meats, and do not promote any sharkmeat meals. It's hurting us and our oceans!
