2.0 out of 5 stars Dubious, 26 Oct. 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Peter Pan (Penguin Popular Classics) (Paperback)
There are apparently lots of versions of this story in publication, so it's possible that the other reviewer is referring to a different one to that which I read. Only this could account for the difference in our interpretations - unless it's just that I've got a mind like a sewer. Because I found the whole book cruel, nightmarish and deeply dubious in its treatment of Peter and Wendy. Was Barrie another Lewis Carroll with a large collection of photographs of naked children in his attic? Don't get me wrong, it's got a cracking plot, but I would never want my kids to read something as insidiously sinister as this. And it's not just me - I studied this book at university level and we all felt the same...

Just finished reading this and wish I hadn't made the effort - really agree with you...

Most likely, anything sinister you are suggesting will go over the heads of most children, so won't disturb them that much. I've only read a few chapters of this edition, but I can't see why you've found it disturbing yet.

I STILL haven't found what you saw was so sinister about it.

I really have to agree with you here. I hated it; I just couldn't see the joy that so many people see in it.
