The current reviews pretty well some up the vibe here but I felt compelled to write a review because this is so damn good! The music snobs amongst you will discard this as American white boy trying to cash in on the current soul revival vibe a la Whitehouse et al. This would be a sad mistake because Mr.Reed has a sound pedigree in the old style RnB/Soul revival movement which goes back a long way.Two previous independant album releases evidence this fact.
Mr.Reed is blessed with a fine soul singing voice which is backed up with a sound understanding of soul music which he demonstrates by doing DJ sets around the US spinning rare soul/funk records.Match this with some great musicians and you have got a great album. In particular the horn section really could be straight out of Stax or Muscle Sholes;they are that great! A nice collection of raw soul combined with a bit of Doo Wop, Gospel and Blues styles add to the variety of tracks.Heart felt lyrics will always be crucial in soul music and Mr.Reed tears out his heart and lays it on the line throughout.
Immediate stand out tracks for me are the sixties pop like 'Name Calling' and the great old style soul 'Pick A Number' which are the potential 'hits' if this can get any airplay; which I doubt. If you like Sam,Otis or Wilson, you really should enjoy this labour of retro soul love. A fine job by Producer Mike Elizondo who really has nailed it!
