This review is from: Vivien Leigh (Hardcover)
This beautifully presented volume offers an overdue look for a new audience a star, who despite winning two Oscars and undertaking one of the most famous roles of all time is often underrated in her own country. A stunning selection of photographs, including some rare gems, is accompanied by a sympathetic but objective account of Leigh's career on stage and screen, as well as her sometimes troubled personal life. Bean includes contemporary accounts from colleagues and friends as well as critical opinion to place Leigh's work in context, providing insight into the craft behind her roles. But the book also does not flinch from addressing more difficult issues, including a moving and sensitive account of Leigh's struggle with mental health issues.
This book will obviously be a treasure for fans, and it's wonderful photographs will mean it will be a lasting one. However it would also be an attractive addition to the libraries of classic cinema fans in general.
