Conspiracy Drama - not an action thriller,
This review is from: Broken City [DVD] (DVD)
When Detective Billy Taggert (Mark Wahlberg) escapes a charge of murdering a rapist, it seems it's only because New York City Mayor, Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) and the Chief of Police, Carl Fairbanks (Jeffrey Wright), have buried some incriminating evidence against him. While they secretly applaud what Taggert has done, they feel he should not continue with the NYPD. Seven years later, Taggert is unsuccessfully running his own private detective agency when the Hostetler offers Taggert a lot of money to spy on his wife, Cathleen (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who he believes is cheating on him. $50,000 is an offer Taggert cannot afford to refuse. But things are not always what they seem and the private detective finds himself caught up in a murderous political conspiracy.
While Broken City is more of a conspiracy drama than thriller, it held my attention from start to finish. I think it's more the calibre of acting than the plot which makes it a winner. I know some people don't rate it but it's all down to expectations. People expect Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg to be in action movies. Well, this isn't one, not really, although there are odd moments. It's drama with a plot that has probably been done before, but there is nothing new under this sun. Everything seems to have been done before in one form or another. But I was never bored, this movie entertained me and that is all I ever want from any movie. Entertainment.
