Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Nintendo Handheld Console 3DS XL - Silver/Black (Nintendo 3DS) (Console)
Note: Remember to order a charger with your 3DS XL if you don't already have one from a 3DS or DSi! The official one is around £7 and good 3rd party chargers are in the £3-5 range.
I bought the Silver version of the 3DS XL because it reminded me of the original DS colour scheme. Like the DS before it, the 3DS has a lot of variety in terms of games - racing, flying, fighting, 3rd person action, sports, turn based tactics and role playing - with many more odd and creative games available through the eShop (the online Nintendo store).
At the time of writing there are around 10-20 Great games (number depends on the genres you like) out for the 3DS system, with a lot of Good games that can be had for cheap if you hunt around. I recommend the usual Mario and Zelda games and jRPGs such as Bravely Default if you like those; definitely check out the eShop too.
About the actual console: The XL has a more ergonomic shape than the original 3DS, larger screens mean you don't need to hold up the console to your face and the 3D effect is more pronounced. Surprisingly, battery life is also slightly better. The XL also comes with a 4GB card instead of the standard 2GB.
On the other hand, even though the XL screens are larger, the resolution is the same on both the 3DS XL and the 3DS so there is more pixelation, the 3DS easier to carry because it is smaller, and it is cheaper.
If you don't care about 3D or have children (who may also end up breaking the hinge and/or tearing off the top screen), you may want to consider the 2DS which is cheaper than both of the clamshell designs.
