Start your engines !!,
This review is from: El Rayo Live (UK Import) (Audio CD)
This was recorded I think around 1982/3, and was riding on the success of the "El Rayo-X" and "Win This Record" albums, which was, and still are, two of my favourites.
The cd has only 6 tracks (and alas is very difficult to get), and they do an absolute storming version of "Wooly Bully". Just great.
But the absolute show stopper here is Mr. Dave singing "Rag Bag" (a Bob "Frizz" Fuller song) whilst playing his Weissenbourn guitar (years before they became trendy). He plays that slide like nobody else. Instantly recognisable!!
The last track is "Mercury Blues".It is his best version I think, and his pedal steel just takes off like a Lockheed.
Accompanying him is Bernie Larsen on guitar, William "Smitty" Smith on keyboards, a very young Jorge Calderon on bass, and the late and very much missed Ian Wallace on those pounding drums. This is one of the best live albums around, believe me.
(I was very lucky to catch the band at Dingwalls around the same time, and they just blew the roof off.)
If you can manage the time, go to his website and take a look at his staggering discography.
