I Didn't Read Mars,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Red Mars (Paperback)
I agree with some of the other two-star reviews that Red Mars suffers from characters who are dull and wooden. If they are the future for humanity I would rather stay on polluted over-populated Earth. Of course, the selection process for colonists might weed out any rebels or characters but the author hints that people lied in tests and introduces a rebel Russian character. So, I think it is poor writing rather than intentional. The colonists are largely American or Russian and this is obviously not forward thinking with both countries abandoning space programmes. How about China and India? I was drawn to this series because I wanted the hard facts of the difficulties of Mars colonization and this is where the book delivers in portraying a cold unforgiving rock. But, I abandoned my mission to read this book about one third of the way through and returned to Earth with no misgivings.
