Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Spiral - Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this series for two reasons. I speak french so like to watch french films to stop getting too rusty. I also like series like The Wire, 24, the shield and to a lesser extent CIS. So I thought this would be entertaining.
I wasn't expecting to be blown away.
I sat down yesterday, a lazy Sunday afternoon, to watch the first couple of episodes and went to bed at 1am, after having watched the entire series back-to-back.
A complicated storyline, about a murdered young woman found in a skip, that reveals itself episode by episode with surprises right up until the end. A police investigation with flawed detectives. A politically sensitive criminal justice department that will happily persecute anyone without political clout. Shameless lawyers with heart. A dark and twisting crime thriller wrapped up in french flair. Spiral is the name, and the name reflects the plot - don't expect anything to be straightforward.
I'm not sure exactly what it is about the series that gripped me so much. The acting is very good, the interplay between characters is subtle and real, the storyline is fairly straightforward but is interwoven with many subplots, some simple some convoluted. Production values are high. It is the sum of the parts that makes the series excellent.
However, the series does have some flaws. The major flaw is that the storyline, as it reveals, depends on some quite striking coincedences of who knows who, which do stretch credibility once you sit back and think about it. The point is, though, that you don't think about it as the drama is so engrossing.
Another flaw, for some, is that the storyline does not resolve as neatly or as clearly as you might want. Personally, after enjoying the ride so much whilst it lasted, I am not going to complain now.

Mr. Stephen E. Tanner says:
What gripped this viewer was the quality of the art direction, the filming and the use of music. Add in the sexy protagonists, a compelling story line, a sdark and shadowy bad guy and good acting eh voila

Bruce S. Herford says:
This brilliant French TV crime drama was shown in Australia on SBS TV, Australia's multi-cultural public broadcaster. I recently purchased both the 1st and 2nd Series DVDs and watched them over a week gripped to my archchair. What impressed me most was the quality of writing, acting and direction and the LACK of "Hollywood/CSI" special effects. It appeared more realistic to me that the Paris Police force were not equiped with the lasted gadgets, fastest cars and most scientific & cutting-edge equiped forensics labs. The characters were flawed and therefor imho, human and more realistic. The series also gave me an insight into the way the French Police/Proscecution/Judiciary and political systems interact with each other, quiet similar to other European jurisdictions, and highlighted the sharp contrast to the UK/US and Australian investigation/legal processes which we are used to seeing in the Anglo-Western view of the same crimes. It encouraged me to view both series with an empathy towards each of the characters and the frustations they are expected to endure in the system they are expected to work within.
My only complaint came with the final episodes of both series which were presented as recaps of the preceding episodes and meant to tie the loose ends up into a neat package which in my opinion does not quiet come off. I felt that this was lazy script-writing and let the series down. Overall I gave both of these series 8/10 on the imdb.com ratings and would have been 9/10 had it not been for the recapped ending episodes, particularly Series 1.
Not perfect, but nonetheless great quality crime drama.
