This is an enjoyable show. It's pretty schmaltzy, and I've had only a few hours' experience in care homes - so idk how accurate or respectful it is. I watched on the strength of previous Ricky Gervais projects, as the Channel 4 advertising didn't do the show any favours. I think it could do without the drunken lech guy -- who, if you need a similar character, should at least be an old dude. At the moment the old people seem to be mostly wallpaper. I'm hoping some of these problems can be rectified next season.
I think a lot of what this show does is deliberately emotionally manipulative (coldplay montages hi). I wouldn't really have much of an issue with this if they'd actually made an effort to show us the story rather than bash us over the head with it repeatedly. The mockumentary style tends to polarise shows into either REALLY GREAT tongue-in-cheek ones (Spinal Tap etc) or ones where the creators use it as an excuse for lazy writing and bucketloads of telling.
I watched every episode, and enjoyed it, but I'm questioning why exactly I did.
