3.0 out of 5 stars A dense, colourful tapestry of a tale, 27 May 2005
This review is from: Stealing Heaven (Mass Market Paperback)
As usual Madeline Hunter weaves a dense, colourful tapestry of a tale that captivates and thrills. Both Marcus and Nesta are strong and independent people. They are sworn and bound by very different duties that deeply divide them from the all encompassing love that they find together. The hazardous path they tread to compromise on their duty and fulfil the promise of their love crafts a compelling read. The one jarring note that resonates throughout the novel is the potion that is employed during a festivity to breach an impasse between the two main characters. The reader cannot help but wish that the writer used another device to thrust forward. The use of the potion, by implication, uncomfortably reminds of the devastation that can be wrought by similar 'potions' (e.g. Rohypnol) in the modern parlance that causes a person to become "beyond awareness" and where "it removes a person's normal restraints". The writer clearly did not mean to signify the bending of a will to quite that extent or manner, but to the mind of this reader Marcus never quite manages to recapture the honour and integrity that are indisputably integral in a 'knight in shining armour'. And this unfortunately lessened the 'shine' of the tale - quite a bit.
