I enjoyed reading about Louise and her life in Paris. I felt her sadness at losing her beloved cousin and brother in WW1. Her static marriage to Henri - her vibrancy and scandalous behaviour both towards her neighbour and in the confessional. But I wish the story had just stayed like that ..... a narrative of a young girl's life in Paris through some troublesome times. For me the addition of the American academic as the narrative frame, and the secretary did nothing to enhance the story and in some ways made the whole thing more confusing. I thought Louise's story was quite strong enough to stand on its own without adding the feverish and ghostly events between the two main characters. I would have been happy for this to be a straightforward story rather than interspersed with a puzzle.
