This review is from: This is the Day: Music on Royal Occasions (Audio CD)
The subtitle of this CD "Music on Royal Occasions" might suggest that it contains a lot of loud, brash music. But in fact there is more in the way of quieter, reflective music, including some real gems. Why have I never heard Schubert's setting of Psalm 23 before ~ that is until hearing it on Classic FM drew me to this CD? What an absolutely beautiful setting of these words for ladies voices it is. "Holy is the True Light" is an evocative miniature from the pen of William Harris, "Song for Athene" is well-known, as is "How lovely are thy dwellings fair" (Brahms) and the tricky Choral Dances from Gloriana by Britten are well sung by the Cambridge Singers. The CD begins with "This is the Day" by Rutter and finishes with perhaps the two items that you would expect to hear on this CD ~ Handel's "Let the bright Seraphim" and "Let their celestial concerts all unite", bringing the compilation to a thrilling end.
This is a most satisfying CD, which I find hard to put down. It is recommended without hesitation. Buy and enjoy!
