Joyous Vocal Pryrotechnics,
This review is from: Weather To Fly (Audio CD)
Since their birth in early nineteen-sixties' Paris The Swingle Singers have
inevitably undergone innumerable lineup changes yet remain one of
the World's most accomplished vocal groups. In their current incarnation
the ensemble's new album 'Weather To Fly' delivers a delightful collection
of thirteen numbers which bear the all the hallmarks of their history brought
bang up to date but continuing to encapsulate all the technical virtuosity
for which they have always been admired. Sometimes slighted for leaning
a little too close to "Easy Listening", these thrilling performances are about
as far from the middle of the road as contemporary vocal music can get.
From the harmonic and rhythmic pyrotechnics of 'Spain'; through the haunting
Arabic cadences of 'Nana'; the breathtaking jazzy reinvention of Beyonce's
'Swingle (sic) Ladies'; the gentle ironies of 'The Diva Aria' (the fearless
coloratura top notes of the soprano soloist are astounding!) to the gorgeous
miniature 'Fugue For Autumn' and "doo-bee-doo" delights of 'Libertango' we
are never less than enchanted by the spectacular prowess of their performances.
For lovers of the human voice and all its wonders this album is a complete joy.
