So much wasted potential,
This review is from: Les Miserables [DVD] (DVD)
With a cast like this and one of the great literary masterpieces for source material, I was expecting more from this version of Les Miserables.
The whole thing was badly edited, giving the impression the filmakers were in a hurry to get through the story while sacrificing the quality. With such great actors it is a pity that the plot was destroyed, to the extent that many scenes and confrontations seemed to be contrived and ridiculous simply because not enough time was spent to develop them. This would and should have been at least a six hour mini-series like the Count of Monte Cristo (Also starring Depardieu) which is magnificent.

In point of fact, this was originally filmed as a six hour mini-series in French... for American viewers, it was edited down to three hours and dubbed into English. Unfortunately, this edited down version is the only one that has been released on DVD in the UK and Australia.
