Excellent quality and still top spec!, 20 Jan 2004
I've owned a Nuvis S since 1999, and take photos at every opportunity, so this is a review based on long experience and heavy usage. This is a truely exceptional quality APS camera. Perhaps a bit long-in-the-tooth in 2004 and no-longer looking as microscopic as it once looked - especially compared to modern digital cameras - this camera has been the constant in my camera bag since purchase. Originally bought to compliment my ageing, but long-lensed 35mm SLR, the Nuvis S has out-lasted it. First there's the outstanding quality and long-reach of the Nuvis S' lens, but the real secret is the solid-steel closing case. With it closed, all the more vulnerable working parts - in fact, three quarters of the whole camera - are very well-protected and the camera has a distinct feeling of invulnerability to it. Indeed, the rugged build-quality and superb picture quality of the Nuvis S actually persuaded me to stick with Nikon and eventually replace the 35mm with a Coolpix 5700 digital prosumer. Nikon quality gives particular reassurance. However, note that the Nuvis S has not been replaced. It will retain its now unassailable position as the camera that can be relied upon to produce superb, reasonably versatile photos, in the tougher, more arduous situations where digitals fear to tread. Camera technology may have moved-on since the Nuvis S was created, and I can understand why a digital would now be the obvious choice for most people, but I would argue that there is still no digital equivalent to the Nuvis S available. If you're looking for a back-up camera that you can rely on to be there (it's so small that you won't mind carrying it), rugged enough to survive very harsh treatment, and still produce excellent quality photos, then this is the camera of choice! (Note; the "Nuvis S" was only available in the UK in very small numbers and is a distinctly different camera from the others bearing variations on the "Nuvis" name, none of which have the all-encompassing steel case).
