A note about the 1-5 box set,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Histories of Middle Earth Vols 1-5 Box Set (Mass Market Paperback)
Why did I not take a closer look before this impulse buy? Keep well away. You might save a few pounds over the individual editions but the cheapness will haunt you everytime you look at or touch these books.
This is an American edition, the covers have the same illustrations as the British ones but have childish titles and a block of gaudy colour at the top obscuring the artwork. More importantly I don't trust them to be complete.
The paper is low quality acid stuff which will disintegrate, almost yellow the day after purchase. The binding is hopeless. If you keep a volume out to read then that book, and all of the others now not crammed together in the box, will expand so that they won't all fit in anymore. The illustration on the box makes no sense unless the old wrinkly elf (yes old, wrinkly, bald elf, dressed like a monk) is Elros - the scenery does fit in with Numenor, but it seems unlikely that the artist had him in mind - so the whole feel and sensibility of this edition is just wrong.
