Over steps the boundaries of taste,
This review is from: Killer Joe [DVD] (DVD)
Killer Joe is a very dark comedy drama that follows small time Texan drug dealer Chirs Smith (Emile Hirsch -The Girl Next Door) who is in serious debt & his life at stake. The only solution he can think of is to have his estranged mother killed for her life insurance money, an idea that he ropes his none too smart father, Ansel (Thomas Haden Church -Sideways) into along with his new Mrs, Sharla (Gina Gershon -Face/Off). In comes Killer Joe (McConaughey), a police detective who has a little side business in murdering folk for money. But has Chris got himself in over his head yet again ?
Killer Joe is a very dark, and at times shocking, comedy drama with a noir feel. The isolation of the desolate Texas setting is gritty & dangerous, as the usually clean cut Matthew McConaughey (A Time to Kill) puts in a surprising performance, playing against his clean cut reputation, with an on the surface seductive & professional demeanor. As his law enforcement authority makes him a God like figure, he can do anything that he pleases. This helped make it more enjoyable to watch due to the unpredictability, tension & humor with the characters around him, scared of him, trying to stay on his good side, even if that means turning on each other to survive, to humorous ends.
The story itself is rather ordinary to be honest, with a very laid back pacing style. The comedy & dark comedy at times was genuinely funny, even the simple things like the suit stitching coming undone in the bank. However, while we are fans of rude & crude humor style films, some of the more explicit scenes with it's twisted morality went a bit too far for our tastes, like the peadophile seduction scene of the teenage girl Dottie (Juno Temple -Atonement). Towards the end of the film it did make up a little for the slow pace early on, with an interesting twist, and then an intense finale that contains the brain searing chicken drumstick fellatio scene, that is probably the first thing you think of when recalling this film.
In conclusion, despite the seat squirming depravity that takes the headlines, the fine acting, humor, story elements & following the characters around Killer Joe made this otherwise ordinary story quite watchable. Contains strong language, graphic violence & mature themes. Worth a watch.
