4.0 out of 5 stars Androids, Kraals, The Master Vs The Fourth Doctor, 18 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Oseidon Adventure (Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures) (Audio CD)
The Oseidon Adventure.
Doctor: Fourth Doctor.
Companion(s): Leela.
Main enemy: The Master, The Kraals.
Main setting: Dark Peak, Derbyshire, 1979, Oseidon.
Writer: Alan Barnes.
Director: Ken Bentley.
Format: 1xCD - part 2.
Running time 60 minutes.

Behind the scenes interviews.

The Doctor - Tom Baker.
Leela - Louise Jameson.
The Master - Geoffrey Beevers.
Colonel Hugh Spindleton - Michael Cochrane.
Marshal Grinmal / Captain Clarke - Dan Starkey.
Tyngworg / Warner / UNIT R/T Operator - John Banks.

1)Leela refers to the Master as "charcoal face".
2)Using Colonel Spindleton's forces, the Master captures UNIT HQ in order to gain access to the Doctor's former laboratory.
3)Prink's Theorem states that ZO-radiation is formed when Z-radiation and O-Zadiation, both of which are harmless on their own, meet. ZO radiation is able to emit the same level of energy as a billion neutron stars. The Master intends to absorb this energy, which will not only provide him with a new regenerative cycle but make him effectively immortal.
The Master foresaw that one of his android duplicates would learn his plan and set an explosive device to detonate in 30 seconds if the deleted files concerning the ZO radiation were accessed.
4)The third android duplicate of the Master survived the destruction of the base and betrays the real Master as he determines that, as an android, he is now the superior version of the Master.
5)This story marks the first appearance of the Kraals in an audio drama and their first appearance in Doctor Who since their introduction in Tv: The Android Invasion in 1975.
6)The Doctor previously encountered the Kraals in the company of Sarah Jane Smith. The Kraals have records of the Doctor's appearance from this encounter. (Tv: The Android Invasion)
7)The Master tells Leela that the last time that he met the Doctor was on Gallifrey. (Tv: The Deadly Assassin)
8)The Kraals have created a second duplicate of Devesham on Oseidon. (Tv: The Deadly Assassin)
9)The Master's TARDIS appears in the form of a grandfather clock. (Tv: The Deadly Assassin, The Keeper of Traken)
10)The Brigadier is still working for UNIT, and still remembers the Doctor. Therefore, it may be prior or during 1976 rather than 1979 as he has not retired yet and has not lost his memory of the Doctor. However, given the UNIT dating controversy, it is far from clear. (Tv: Mawdryn Undead).

Plot Synopsis.
The first time the fearsome Kraals attempted to take over the Earth, with their androids, things didn't go quite according to plan -- thanks to the time-travelling alien known as the Doctor, Sarah Jane & UNIT.

This time, Marshal Grinmal and his belligerent cohorts are ready for them, This time, they'll make no mistakes, This time Chief Scientist Tyngworg has not just one plan, but a back-up plan to a back-up back-up plan worked out...

With the Doctor a prisoner on the Kraals' radiation-blasted home planet of Oseidon, only his companion Leela can save the day -- alongside a most unlikely ally the Master.

Timelord Thoughts.
The Oseidon Adventure written by Big Finish script editor Alan Barnes is the conclusion to Trail Of The White Worm & a sequel of sorts to the Fourth Doctor tv adventure The Andriod Invasion yet has a 60's type The Avengers feel to it.

If you haven't heard the previous story this audio adventure will make little sense yet listened together with Trail Of The White Worm hovever & there's some neat inventive ideas going on, like the inability to tell a clone from the real person is a great twist which I thought added great drama to the story.

Android duplicates, radioactive surfaces, villages, bombs, immortality, UNIT this is basically The Android Invasion redux for audio but it does feature Tom Baker in cracking form as the Fourth Doctor especially in the scenes were he's pitied against Geoffrey Beevers who's excellent sinister performance as the Master is chilling & terrifying who is the Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes it's the old cliche scenario of good vs evil, right or wrong, yin & yang.

Louise Jameson as Leela steals the show for me however & is truly a brilliant actress as Leelas savage instincts kick into force in wanting to slit the throats of the Kraals, destroy the Androids & upon the Master's attempt at hypnotism on her Leela slaps his face, Louise Jameson has really expanded the teacher/student relationship with the Doctor in this series of storys as the writers have given her some great written material slowly growing up as a character & it will be interesting to see what the writer's will do with Leela next in the upcoming series 3.

Overall despite lacking some originality The Oseidon Adventure is a competent conclusion to series 1 of Fourth Doctor adventures with great performances by the cast & high quality production values from Big Finish productions delivers a enjoyable entertaining audio adventure.

Timelord Rating.

Again, another fantastic review to the conclusion of the Master story with the Doctor and Leela. You write some very fine, captivating reviews, timelord!

Enjoyed this second CD to the Master story and having the Kraals from 'The Android Invasion' makes its even more exciting. Louise Jameson as Leela has developed really well in the audios compared to the TV series, and it's great Big Finish do look after the character we know and love from 'Doctor Who'.

Fantastic reviewing! Tim.
