Fantastic return from the New Yorkers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Your Bones (Audio CD)
This was one of the albums I was looking forward to next year. After YYY's amazing debut album I wondered which direction they would now go in. Gone are Karen O's moans and groans, replaced by a more mature singing voice, however it still retains its charm that so many grew to love over the first album. The first few times you listen to the album, you think that it just isn't the YYYs. After a while, something inside clicks and you think: YES! This is the NEW YYYs! Yes, they have changed, but for the better. Their stripped down, raw, punk sound is gone for most of the album, but the new mellow songs are just as fantastic as the rock-out tunes from 'Fever To Tell.' In their debut, they showed how good they were at writing these kind of songs at the end (Maps, Y Control) and have focused more on this in 'Show Your Bones.' 'Gold Lion,' the new single, is fantastic, as is 'Way Out.' 'Warrior' has to be the highlight for me though. Nick Zinner's guitar is, as in the first album, not just background noise. It really is genius guitar playing. I read somewhere that the YYYs said they think its unlikely that they will be making another album. This is a huge shame as they were a great talent and had so much more to offer!
In summary: A change for the YYYs, but into a more mature band. An excellent album full of gems. Just make sure you listen to it loads!
