This review is from: Last Days (Paperback)
I've read loads of science fiction and horror so maybe I'm desensitised, but I didn't find this novel as scary as other reviewers did. In fact, if I had to catagorise it I would call it more a comedy horror.
The jocular, matey relationship between the slightly neurotic guerilla filmmaker Kyle and his overweight, scruffy cameraman Dan reminded me too much of the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost buddy films. Again, nothing wrong with that and I could fully buy into their relationship and lifestyle. Also, the actual historical, supernatural origins of the cult are a bit convoluted and forced. I have to admit I got a bit confused about who was possessing who and why.
Having said that, the book was a great read, and the descriptions of the origins of the cult was very well done, as Nevill himself mentions in the book, he has done a lot of research into cults and it pays off. Some of the set pieces are also very well written and evocative, especially the house in London and the Arizona desert.
Overall I enjoyed reading Last Days and will probably read more of Nevill's books.
