This review is from: Raising My Voice: The Extraordinary Story of the Afghan Woman Who Dares to Speak Out (Paperback)
What struck me most is to learn from this young Afghan woman living in Afghanistan how the average Afghan individual perceives the 'help' of the US and the NATO today. Contradictory to what we are all made to believe by the media in this part of the world, they do not see these troops as the saviour of their country, but as an occupying force. More so after the incredible number of innocent casualties and deaths amongst civilians after the continuous bombardements. The warlords and drugslords who are backed by the US are part of the government. They have their own militias, plenty of arms and are stronger than the Afghan army. The extreme fundamentalists are backed by countries such as Iran and Pakistan. Countries such as China, Iran, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Russia and the US are meddling in Afghanistan to gain control of the energy forces or impose a fundamentalist regime. The imperialism of this world never seems to come to an end. When everyone pulls out of Afghanistan though, there will probably be a civil war, however according to the writer, this will be much less severe when the warlords and fundamentalist consistently no longer receive support from foreign powers. The clear message from Malalai Joya is for all foreign troops to pull out now and let the country go through its democratic development process by itself. Everyone who believes we are saving the people of Afghanistan from the Taliban, should read this book.
