A curate's egg perhaps, but oh! the good parts ...,

It needs to be said immediately that this isn't the most consistent album. It's actually symmetrical: tracks 1>4 fab, though 2 not quite so much; 5>8 okay; 9>12 fab, though 11 not quite so much. Landes has a lovely warm voice; the playing and arrangements are top notch; the lyrics are quirky ("they stole the subjects from your paintings, but left the canvas in the frames"); and if you have a decent hi-fi it sounds great: but the bottom line is that the good songs are just wonderful.
Do you know the feeling when a song starts that you really love, when the heart just skips slightly? Then try "Dig Me A Hole", letting it run into "I'm In Love With The Night" ... perhaps I doth protest too much, but just wonderful. And while I really hate the "hidden song at the end of the album" nonsense, Landes's cover of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" is, well, wonderful - helped by the fact that the gap in between song 12 and bonus 13 is around 10 seconds rather than 10 minutes.
Five stars for an album of which the middle third is entirely disposable? Damn right! Be grateful that those songs aren't as good as the rest: it might have been too much for the heart to bear ...
