5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the lean, mean, beguiling machine ..., 9 Jan 2002
This review is from: This Is Stina Nordenstam (Audio CD)
It's a testament to the remarkable emotional completeness of this little album that one entirely forgets (and forgives) it's brevity - I listened through to it first time without noting the duration, and was astonished to discover afterward that it had lasted less than 32 minutes. From the disconcertingly low-key opener, "Everyone Else in the World", Stina unfolds a magically strange and beautiful interior landscape, troubled by sinister undertones and unnerving cynicism, all the more chilling for her trademark honeyed delivery. For the most part these are songs of love lost or unrequited - the heartbreaking "Clothe Yourself for the Wind" and "Stations" will haunt your dreams - although she has her upbeat moments along the way; the two tracks featuring Brett Anderson are 70-s style stompers, and the utterly delightful "Lori-Glory" is the most fun I've ever heard Stina having on record, purest pop. The album closes poignantly with the mature resignation of "Sharon and Hope", a fitting end to a gorgeous, addictive record. As always the arrangements, although spare, are absolutely spot-on, the musical palette this time comprising mainly piano, rhythm guitar and bass/drums, with an occasional blast of very 70s horns. Not to mention that voice.
