Great to see that the U.S. can still make strong character-led bitter-sweet comedies,

Apparently Adventureland has been heavily over-hyped by the studio marketing suits as a 'gut-busting laugh-a-second' teen comedy film. Thankfully I didn't hear any of that hype before I saw it. So what I saw and enjoyed was a pitch-perfect bitter-sweet comedy drama, with some strong chuckles here and there, but with the main attraction being the superb character-acting throughout. And with a strong story that provides a poignant structure for the actors to work within. Yes, the storyline meanders in places, but that's rather refreshing in the age of big dumb pile-driver plots. Faults? The director throws in some cursory visual references to the film being set in 1986, but these feel really "stuck-on" and are not well integrated. And I would personally have been happy if the film had ended on the night-time arrival of the bus, rather than a few minutes later, leaving the ending ambiguous. After a crop of awful U.S. pseudo-comedies in recent years, it's encouraging to see that America can still produce a strong teen comedy film that owes something to the Woody Allen tradition.
