lounge jazz coasting,
This review is from: River: The Joni Letters (Audio CD)
restrained, refined and restricted. The musicians are of a high calibre but they sound like they are playing under strict instructions to be reverential and not too excited. Very little dynamic range is shown throughout. Guest vocals sound like a 'chat show' selection. Norah Jones follows Joni's inflections and Tina Turner throttles back her voice..... if you haven't got them already, hunt out the originals. This does little to enhance or develop the original work.
Leonard Cohen's overblown and pompous oration on 'The Jungle Line' is laugh-out-loud ludicrous.
An album less than the sum of its parts.....
