Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Putin's Russia (Revised Edition) (Kindle Edition)
I laboured my way through this book and, in part, it was due to the at times very stilted English (is the book translated from the Russian ?). One example (a description of Putin): "...he is not a linear personality lacking internal vacillations". I'm still working that one out.
This book only takes us into the second term of Putin's presidency and, accordingly, its way out of date "today". I did not realise that until I had bought it. Should not this be told to the potential buyer ?
The authoress appears to be someone very much looking in (or trying to) from the outside, rather than someone with good inside knowledge. Although I now know more about Putin (background, chosen by Yeltsin, etc.), I don't feel I know more about his character than I did before. There seems to be little effort to analyse him, which is a great pity. Indeed the authoress finishes up by asking "...and who is Putin - a noble knight or an evil demon ?...". I was hoping, madam, that you would tell me that ! I actually think he is evil and very, very dangerous to the west.
There has been no attempt to even mention the incredible amount of industrial espionage being carried on by Russia under Putin, etc.
While I enjoyed the book, I felt that it left me with many questions unanswered, and I feel my money could have been better spent elsewhere.
