5 women stuck on a PINK submarine full of men! Great classic comedy.,
This review is from: Operation Petticoat [DVD] (DVD)
Firstly, i would like to say that i don't believe that this film is strictly a war film. It's a great comedy film that happens to be based on a submarine during the war.
The basic story, without giving too much away, is that Cary Grant is reading his diary & looking back at his time on a submarine before they take it away as scrap. As the commanding officer, he has to get his boat away from enemy waters but he only has two weeks to do work that will take two months. His crew have been sent to other ships & so he has to make do with what he is given. In comes Tony Curtis!
His only duty is to find the things they need, machinery parts, toilet paper etc & he comes up with some interesting ''finds'' including Ramone, an ex-prisoner & 5 very attractive women!
The insuing mayhem caused by or because of the women officers is very funny & the end result was a real suprise when i first saw the film. (I didn't see it coming!) The scene in the engine room is great where the engineer says to one of the women 'Congress may have made you a Major but God made you a woman & this is still my engine room so get lost.' Or words to that effect!
I can't reccommend this film enough. I'm only 26 & have as much fun as any 20-something does but on a dreary Sunday afternoon or when you're sick in bed you can't beat this in a stack of great films.
Try this out with Father Goose (Cary Grant again), Hobson's choice (John Mills), Some like it hot (Tony Curtis again), your duvet & your favorite thing to eat! (On a wet Sunday, mine's hot milk over wheetabix!) Lovely!
