I love Cesar Franck's music. I like to explore other composers who were close to him as well.
This CD includes cello sonatas from three composers who shared the same period in French musical history.
Ysaye is put at the center as being the young virtuoso and composer who helped Franck's wonderful music to reach an international audience, only in his last years, by insistently performing with his artistic genius.
Franck's Sonata in A was sent to Ysaye as a wedding gift and it was received so passionately by Ysaye that he played it everywhere and this piece gained a worldwide reputation for the composer and inspired other composers as well.
Ysaye was a composer as well as he was a virtuoso of violin. His solo cello sonata Op. 28 is rather dark in mood, it was published just after his wife's death in 1924.
Lekeu espoused the doctrine that "music must be, above all, emotional, fulsome and intense". His beautiful sonata bears all these. The young composer was in the artistic circle of Franck and Ysaye. Unfortunately this passionate composer died less than a year after writing his sonata, before reaching his 24th birthday from typhoid. Just a few years of composing and this wonderful output...
Wallfisch and York have performed well.
I highly recommend this CD to the chamber music lovers.
