A great read - but is it all true?,
This review is from: The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation (Paperback)
I do not know why Edward III is one of our lesser known kings. I knew very little about him at all and only bought this book based on the Amazon ratings. I was looking for a good history book to read and I am so glad that I did. It is great book to read, really well written, not dry and academic. I found it very hard to put down.
There is a lot in here. The intrigues with his mother, Mortimer and Edward II, the jousting and extravagances, war with France, political machinations all appear in here. The war with France is particularly gripping, especially as Edward was something of a warrior himself but the exploits by his right hand men are also fascinating.
Is he right about his theories on the survival of Edward II? I have no idea and I am sure there is scholarly debate elsewhere on the subject. His arguments are compelling enough for me but there is a good bit of conjecture around it.
Overall, a really good book, I thoroughly recommend it.
