This review is from: Jane Eyre [DVD] (DVD)I have never written a review on here but thought this film needed more 5 star ratings. I have read Jane Eyre and have seen all the film and television versions, I thought this was by far the best, in previous adaptations the character jane is this strapping, healthy, tall feminist (think Ruth Wilson). If you read the book she is plain and small and battered by life so it was refreshing to see a small (not very) plain actress play the part. Michael Fassbender was excellent as Rochester keeping the part serious and dark not a comedy part (think Toby Stephens). I really felt this was true to the book and would recommend this film to any Jane Eyre fan, I only wish I had seen it at the cinema.

I think it is a measure of the greatness of this novel - to my mind, the greatest novel ever written- that there are so many passionately held and different opinions. I have every film and television version of this masterpiece - and I will not spoil a nice, quiet Sunday afternoon by revealing the three versions which I have not invited into my home ! And I greatly appreciate the fact that, on Amazon, on the whole, the arguments are rational and reasoned. Personally, my favourite Jane, by a million miles, is Samantha Morton and my favourite Rochester, albeit by far the most controversial, is Ciarán Hinds. But I do not expect everybody to agree with that viewpoint. This is one of the world's most passionate stories and there are going to be passionate differences of opinion: good !!! That means that Jane Eyre is still vigorously alive and, hopefully, always will be.
